CV boot/bearings problem-rsz_cv_boot2.jpg

Can some one identify this problem? There is a clicking, and I think its the bearings. These are some pic. of it.

The atv is a 2002 Polaris Sportsman 400.

clicking going backward is common problem from what i read but you really need to get those off and clean the dirt and grease out of those cv joints and put new boots on them if they arent ruined by now looking at the mud and dirt on your wheeler.

It clicks whenever the atv is moving.

Chances are pretty good if you've been running it like that with torn boots then the cv's are trashed. Best bet is to replace the axle since replacing both ends would cost almost as much(unless you go with the cheap aftermarket ones on ebay which probably won't hold up). Looks like you mud a lot so my advice is to get some beefy a-arm guards and keep an eye on those boots. Much cheaper to replace a torn boot than an entire axle.

Are the bearings already bad, because of the clicking? Also, how would I replace them? Or were?

If they're clicking, I would guess yes. There's a sticky up top on how to replace the rear CV's on a Sportsman....check it out to get an idea of what needs to be undone

if it's clicking, 99% of the time the cv joint is bad. once you take it apart you can check the bearings to see if there bad, but they usually don't click from a bad bearing. also putting new grease in after cleaning w/out replacing the cv joint won't work for very long if at all unless your lucky. imo

I have one more question, about how much will it cost to get the CV joint replaced at a ATV repair shop?

Depends on the shop, you can figure one hour per side labor plus the price of the shaft.

Call the c-v man,1-800-338-2326, he has what you need at a lower price than the dealer.
