With the back firing out of the carb I would say check the middle cam lobe for wear, very common on the 500s, do a search on it. But it would have nothing to do with the gas carb leak.

Here is a post about it with many links.

so my next question, as common sense as this may be, say this 4-wheeler hasn't been serviced in 4 years, this would most definitely increase the amount of wear on the camshaft as well as the rest of the engine? I would expect this to be true, and if so why would it finally fail now? The ticking time bomb effect i presume....lol....and if they were to buy a whole new carb, it probably wouldn't fix the problem?

Should i speak up about this cam issue before they go spending $360 on a new carb?

Seein' as how one screw up ruins has ruined my whole reputation as the only person on the ranch that can turn a wrench.......how do i convince the ignorant and now untrusting that this is in fact the problem?

But please remember that the boss won't spend money on the things that are important, like 4-wheelers that we need to fix fence and irrigate with, rather he'll go spend it on recreational stuff....and that if i can't fix this one problem because i couldn't get it to work right again then im utterly worthless....

sorry if im ranting but im **** full of bein **** on because the first thing i did when i got on the ranch was fixing all the mechanical stuff they needed that had sat around for 6 months broken down because no one knew how to work on it.

all you have to do is pull the valve cover off and spin the motor watching the lobe on the exhaust cam it'll take 10 minutes to verify that if its bad it'll be very noticeable
