Default 92 Trail Boss purchase - some general questions

So I bought this old quad and as I'm tearing into it I have a few questions...

1. Looks like it used to have a speedometer. Is it OK to just remove whats left of the cable from the connection on the tranny and leave that uncapped or should I cover that connection somehow?

2. I have done some searching on the forum and have found some good ideas on quieting it down, I have ordered new exhaust springs as the ones on it are pretty weak and I also have a used muffler on the way, but any other ideas on quieting would help.

3. This quad has been run batteryless for awhile. Any common parts I will need to check, like the voltage reg?

4. Any other hints/tips/tricks that'll apply to this quad?

Thanks!
Jim

Question

A few more...

5. I've looked at a couple of sites looking for the exhaust manifold gasket. Looks like none of them stock it. Is it possible it's not available anymore???

6. I see something on the parts fiche called a "Fin Damper" that looks like it goes between the cooling fins and by the name I guess "dampens" them. As in "reduces the sound being radiated off them"??

Thats it for now...

Thanks!

I don't see that anyone is still going to be stocking that, under that part number. What you may have to do is go up each year on the microfiche and check and see if the part number gets superseded by another. Then check the first year of the 250 TrailBlazer and see if maybe that matches up.

Or take the old one by a muffler shop and see what they have that might work.

Didn't see the part called fin damper. But then again I might not have been looking at the right model. I would think it would be more vibration related than sound.

Thanks for the reply...

I'm sure I can find some gasket material to improvise if I need to.

This is what I mean...
28-FIN DAMPER #1-3083929 $9.79
29-FIN DAMPER #2-3083930 $9.79
30-FIN DAMPER #3-3083931 $9.79
31-FIN DAMPER #4-3083932 $9.79

Looks interesting anyway. The fins do look big enough to vibrate at audible frequencies.

Seeing it now, I remember tossing it out on the wife's Trailblazer.

Fuel line! Awesome idea... I know I've got some extra lying around and it'd be a LOT cheaper than the $10 for each piece.

Thanks guys.

Any ideas on the speedo drive question in my first post? Is that something I need to cap if I remove the cable?

Thumbs up

A quick update... Electrical system is working now. Installed a new battery and a solenoid off an old outboard and it all works. Most of the bulbs are blown from the previous owner running it without a battery so I gotta go shopping in the AM.

IKE, the fuel line in the fins helped a LOT! Knocked down the ringing. Now I can hear where the exhaust leaks are... LOL
