I have a 700 X2 and the backrest binds and its a PITA; just dust from the trail causes it.
As for the clicking in the steering can't help with that.

This aditude is why I bought from a differnt dealer. They where going to charge me shop time to look over my 99 sp 500 before I could trade it in I laughed at them and said not a chance and they lost out on 8 grand with a stupid coment.
Careful how you approach this with the local dealers...they may "talk". You don't want to end up having nobody to trust. I would call the owner of the dealer and calmly explain that you'd like to have him look over the bike for you. Sometimes these guys in the shop make decisions the owner would not be pleased with if he knew exactly what was being said. Worth a try before you jump dealers. Attempt to be as calm as possible...difficult I know.

I know its a sticky situation, I have been there. And I would assume with lots of folks
going thru the crappy XP fixes/warrenty issues they could write a book on it.

I like FR's approach and I would second that motion. I would also add that if you have
to pay for shop labor to evaluate the problem you would like to see a diagnositic report
of what was checked (pre-deterimine of how long all their inspections checks for 1 hour of
labor). That sows the seed on demanding honesty. And hopefully when they
document their processes they will legitimately diagnose the problem. Another thought
also is maybe they could compromise and meet you half way $45 for shop labor.

I had a falling out with my local dealership and toward the end I asked if he could
do me something for customer satisfaction. He said, what is it? I said well I can't
seem to budge the bottom stripped oil drain plug on my 800, how about a free oil change
after all this time of waiting for service etc. He told me he couldn't give me
any free parts but could give me the free labor to do it. I said fine, I have the oil
change kit along with the replacement drain plug. I will drop it off with the last
check and all agreed and it was done.

While that DID not bring back my loyalities to their shop, it ended at least on a
calm note. For many of the unresolved issues I ended up taking it to my dealer
(now) 2 1/2 hrs away in the next state to get it all resolved. I couldn't handle their
mechanical incompetence anymore.

We feel your pain man!

I have been it the automotive service industry for 30 years. People will bring cars in all the time with phantom noises that they cant describe and want them fixed. Manfacturer of vehicle dont pay for time to look for a problem that is not found. At the car dealer level the good techs are paid by what they do and be working for free. No one wants to work for free. Is it possible the problem you had was caused by mud. You said you washed it and noise went away? 15 Miles is not very much. Some times the service guy just doesnt explain him self correctly. He should have told nicely that you would have to show him the noise so he had a place to look and if it was cause d by something not covered by your warranty that you would have to be responsible for it. I have my one shop but dont sell vehicles so I dont have to worry about dealing with that problem but if a customer brings a car back that we have worked on we check it for free. I wont tear it apart looking for phantom sounds but we will road test and at least try to verify the problem. I have lots of customers and we do anything we cant to keep them happy with in reason.

I took mine in last year because I thought it was overheating. They looked at it for a while trying to replicate my problem but could not. I'm thinking since I washed her like crazy right before I took her in, the rad was now clean and I imagine that was my problem all along.
They never charged me a thing. Some dealers have the attitude that you are causing them greif by giving them bussiness. As soon as I get that attitude or they try to pull a fast one I'm out of there and I let them know why.
