Default Hall Effect or Speedometer?

ey guys....I have a 2004 Sportsman 400 that I just picked up. There are two "modules" that are supposed to be plugged into the back of the speedo. When I got it, only the bigger of the two was plugged in.....there are a couple of wires that are connected to nothing. How do I find out if it's the hall effect (which is what I suspect is unplugged) that is bad or the speedometer (whic costs a LOT more to replace)? The speedo does not register speed or hours or miles, but once in a while some numbers pop up under the RPM's....they are probably not right as they max out at 50 and seem to like to settle at about 10, but there are numbers there none the less. I know very little about trying to get these fixed and am just trying to get it working correctly. Also....the cover thing on the front of the machine has tabs that hold it down....one of those broke off, what is the best and/or easiest way to get that fixed so it will hold? Thanks for helping a girl out!
