'96 SP500 Starter Problems????
#1
My starter only clicks when i push the starter button. I know my battery is charged and I dont know what is wrong. Also where can i pick up a shop manual and how much will it cost? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. What about some upgrades? What will give it some more power, for not too much money?

It's got to be in the battery...if you're SURE it's not dead (they don't last long), check your connections...make sure they're clean and making good contact.
The manual you can get from your dealer or at the Polaris site (I think). A soft-back costs about $20 and a nice three ring binder runs about $45 or so.
As far as mods, just do a simple search in here and you'll get more than enough info on pipes, springs, carbs, airboxes,.......the list goes on and on.........

I had this on my 96 400.
Water gets in to the starter motor that is at the very bottom of the engine, postiioned so that it gets wet all the time. Your Bendix spring has rusted and seized so that it can not throw out the cog to engage it any more. Be thankful that it did not throw out then seize. As you rev the motor, you are driving the starter motor, and it goes bang!.
Anyway, remove the skid plate, the right side cover (where the pull starter is).
Stand the bike on it's end, and remove the starter motor from the bottom of the motor(I think you need a 7mm ring spanner). if you check out the like below, it will show you pics of how to get there.

It is for the 2000 models, but they are mostly the same.
You may need to buy a new starter, but you may be able to dismantle it and use lots of WD40 or CRC to get it loose again.
Once you have got it working, make sure you undo the drain plug in the bottom of the motor to drain the water out after a wet ride. once you have drained it out, spray some WD40 or CRC down the pull cord hole to keep the rust away, as once you have removed the water, and the air gets to it, it will seize up real quick.
