Over the counter Oil vs OEM ???
I am new to quads and have purchased what has turned out to be a project (as in fixer-upper). I bought a 2002 700 Twin Sportsman from my boys best friend.
It needs all the CV joints in the rear and maybe front too! Not sure about the front though.
In any case...I am plugging away at other areas of concern while I wait for the Mrs. to cut loose with $$$$$ for parts.
I have a new drive belt on the way, an oil filter and...2 qts Mobile1 Synthetic oil. My wife went to the dealer in Reno yesterday and they didn't have the right oil! I tried to find out if M1 would be OK but didn't get a firm answer so honey picked me up 2 qts. and is on her way home with it now.
Will it be OK???
I don't have an owners manual to read, so I am not sure about specifics re: maintenance. I saw on You Tube a guy had a video and said he uses Mobile1. Is there an online database/owners manual I can read???
Thanks!

What's the weight of the Mobil 1 that you bought . Your factory oil is Polaris PS-4 Plus which is 2w50 Synthetic or you could use 0w40 like a Amsoil . You don't want to be using a 5 or 10 w weight oil . PURE POLARIS OIL

Well...she just got home and my son-in-law told her not to buy the Mobile1. Instead she drove to the other side of Reno to a place called Reno Motor Sports and bought 2 qts of Motul 5100 Ester10W40 4 Stroke Motorcycle oil. It's a synthetic blend.
So...I will leave it in the bag and have her return it next week when she goes in for groceries, I wish I had known before she went to the bike shop! I told her 0w40 but she's a chick She probably FIGURED I said it WRONG!!!
No matter...I can't ride it right now anyway. I need new CV joints in the rear for sure. I found www.americancvstore.com and they have pretty good prices...don't know about their quality though.
I have 2 CV joints per axle, a rebuild kit is $79.95. A complete CV Joint is $89.95. A complete axle is $199.95!!! I'm thinking I could buy the axles and not have to bother tearing it apart, cleaning and then dis-assembling the old axles...THEN re-assembling the axles and then the final install. For the difference in price, it just seems logical. Even my wife AGREES!
Thanks for your input! I have a lot to learn! I am wondering WHY Polaris would have been out of the PS-4???

I have used 5w-30 Castrol syntec in all the motor and tranny of all my machines for over 15 years , never had any problems, have a 97 -425 Magnum with 7000 miles, had a 03-700 sportsman with over 5400 miles , now have an 09 -850, the oil filter you want is a Wix # 51357, get from your local parts house, use the mobile 1 oil, the only place I use Polaris oil is the front diff, it takes the denand drive fluid, rear diff takes synthetic 80-90

So as long as the oil meets manufactors specs its safe and cheaper to use it.
here is the old 0w-40 stuff.
Heres the new 2w-50 stuff.

After about 20 hours on my 2007 X2, I switched to Mobil 0w-40 and Mobil M1-110 filter. Now four changes later and I've had zero issues. Runs great. Not a polaris dealership within 40 miles. I do order the other fluids from Parker Yamaha though. If you register on the Polaris website you will have access to the original owners manual. Good luck!

cheap cycle parts .com for the OEM parts. NAPA/Wix filter plus Mobil 1 oil for the oil changes.
