Default 96 trail boss transmission help

I recently picked up a 96 trail boss with a broken shift linkage. Fixed the shift linkage. Heres the problem. When I put it into forward and hit the throttle it immediatly pops out of gear and makes a grinding or rattling noise. I even tried removing the shift linkage and putting it in forward then starting it, makes no difference. It goes in reverse no problem. I did check the fluid and it needs changed for sure, but would that be enough to make it pop out of gear like that? Should I be looking for a new tranny? All help greatly appreciated.

Pull it out and take it apart. The problem will be obvious. Replace the chain while you are in there.

After you get it done fill the trans with Castrol Syntec 5w50. Change it at least once a year and you will have no more problems.
