Question 03 Sportsman 600 Twin Gas smell

Hi All,

I have an 03 600 twin. I am smelling gas fumes even after I let it idle(after turning the gas off) till it dies. I come back to the garage and can smell a fairly strong gas odor around the bike. Would this indicate a fuel valve leak? I do not find any wet spots on the bike or under it. I would put the smell on a scale of 1-10 in the 5-6 range. Where could the smell be originating from....??? Thanks for the help!

Make sure the overflow tube is hooked up to the bottom of the carb or you likely will not see it on the floor cuz it would drain on the back of the engine. Check your on/off fuel valve for leaks too. Mine has went bad before.

I have a 2002 SP 700 twin and when I go riding I fill it up on the way to the trail at a gas station. When I get it off the truck i open the gas cap to presureize the tank (I fill at 100ft sea level and ride above 3000ft). When im riding on the trail I smell gas but when I stop I dont. I've looked on the quad for wet spots but dont find any. Was wondering if this would be the same or not.

Thanks Jeff

Gas tank venting?, check your vent tube, its under the plastic on top of the gas tank and comes out under the handle bars.

Default 03 Sportsman 600 Twin Gas smell

Had the same problem with my magnum 425. Pull the overflow tube off under the carb, make sure the fuel is on and see if gas is dripping from the overflow under the carb. If there is a drip, then you may have a stuck float or trash in the carb.

I have an 04 600 with the same problem. Turns out the gas tank vent line just below the gas cap (under the plastic) was broken off. So when Iwould ride I could smell gas. Took off the plastic over the tank and replaced vent line elbow and now no more problem.
