Is the four stroke 500 scram much more reliable than a two stroke 400 scram. Also is the 400 bieng a (two stroke)that much easier to upgrade.

Having just gone through this delima myself I am very glad that I decided to go with the 400 for several reasons. Ease/cost of mods, and I have heard complaints of the 500 being very nose heavy( rode with one over the weekend). It is your decision in the long run, I'm just glad I had the folks around here to help steer me in the right direction.

I have a 400 and have ridden a friend's 500 and rode with it a lot. *When both were stock* the performance is very close. Top speed, handling and such. The 500 4-stroke is nice. So is the 400 2-stroke. In my own opinion, if you want to buy it and ride with no intentions of changing it the 500 might be the right one for you. 4-strokes are traditionally longer lasting. If you want serious performance by modification go with the 2-stroke. The mods are cheaper and much more abundant. They are both a lot of fun and perform great. Good luck to deciding.

I have the 500 and one of my friends has the 400 as already said , when stock there very similar but if you want lots of mods go with the two stroke but you may lose the reliability factor plus I like constant 4 stroke power. If I was in my 20's Id take the 2stroke but Im not and have the 4stroke and Im happy with it.At least your deciding between two polaris(What else in sport 4x4 is there).

I have a 500 4x4, but if I could do it over again, I would have bought a 2000 400 4x4. It is so much cheaper to mod and has a much more dramatic effect on performance than the 500 does. I also think the 2-stroke is easier to work on. You should see how many thingies are attached to my carb on the 500. I don't even want to touch the dern thing!

I won't be selling my bike anytime soon though. The 500 does everything the 400 can do on the trails and has better throttle control IMHO.

With equal mods, the 400 4x4 spanks my 500 4x4 in any kind of a race on any kind of terrain period!

Too bad they don't sell the 400 4x4 anymore.

Regards,

MrMan

Thanks, i still need to know about reliability. I don't mind spending time working on it I'm just not real comfortable messing around with the engine(taking apart, rebuilding, ect)alot. And yes, i know they quit making the 400 4x4 and that sucks but i can't afford a new one anyways so it's not really a problem for me. Leaning towards the 400.

If you want to mod it, get the 400. The 400 is in a pretty mild state of tune from the factory. Getting more HP out of one is pretty easy.
The pistons are the weakest link in the engine. If it has a bunch of hours, consider putting a Wiseco in it to freshen it up and build from there.

I am almost 100% sure that the engine in the Scrambler is the same as the one in my 95 400 2x4 and i have over 8000 miles on mine in the last three summers and all we have had to do is put in one sparkplug and clean the carb every spring whne we pull it out and it will still do 55-60mph and hang a good catwalk and it always starts unless you hid a puddle to slow to hydroplane but yet fast enough to get everything wet but you leave it for 5min and you are flyin again

I have a 96 400 4x4, that has had it's a$$ ridden off it. Broken a few things through user error, but motor is bullet proof. I have just replaced the piston, rings and bearings after 5 years of abuse. The piston was cracked, and the rings worn, but the guy at the reconditioner shop said the sleeve was perfect! Not bad for the canning it gets, incvluding racing speedway and flat track, as well s many hard trail miles.

Just keep the maintaince up and you will have no problems.
