2001 Polaris Sportsman 500 4wd works sometimes
#1
I have a 2001 Sportsman. Lately this thing goes into 4wd....sometimes. It sat for a few years in a shed after an a-arm broke. It seems to have some gremlins now. I got it running again and now the 4wd is not working all the time when I want it to. Any thoughts on this?? Thanks

Change the hub fluids first of, here a good link on the AWD set up. ATV Time :: View topic - Polaris Demand Drive Hub Q&A Picture Guide to Service

I rode mine for a month with a dead battery without ill effects, I think you only need a good battery if the model has a ECM brain box (2004.5 and up), unlike the older makes.

I quess it was all in my imagination that my AWD worked fine with a dead battery for a entire month on my 2001 model.

I guess i will take all our service manuals at the dealership i work at and under 4wd trouble shooting mark out number one question.Does machine have a good 12 volt battery.Maybe yours worked fine but we have had many customers with bad battery and no 4wd replace battery and 4wd works fine again.

Like I said maybe the 2004.5 and up with the ECM brain box may need a good battery for the AWD to work but our 97 and 2001 models do not seem to. Our 97 even had a smashed off speedo from a roll over that did not effect the AWD. The speedo must work for the 99 and up models to have AWD so things do change from year to year.
