Welcome to the forum! I can tell you my way which is almost by the book mainly because I had a lift and the puller for the front clutch! I just removed the clutches and backing plate and the starter bracket will stare you in the face, right at the bottom of the engine! 3 bolts hold the bracket on the engine case and you have to remove the recoil housing as there are two bolts holding the front of the starter inside. When all bolts are removed you can pull the starter and the bendix out and disconnect the starter wire. When replacing the starter the bendix has to be installed with it as a unit (you can see that the bendix fits in the starter behind the flywheel) Make sure you clean and grease the bendix and use an rtv sealant around the starter gasket. Some guys with GOOD fingers have gotten the starter off without clutch removal,BUT the rear bracket bolt is a tough one to get to. PS If you have a 95 300 its either a 2x4 or a 4x4,the only Sportsman that year was the Sportsman 400.(I'm just being trivial!!) Keep us up dated! OPT
