Default Help with Hawkeye hesitation above half throttle

Hello All,

(I've searched for and read through all the pertinent threads on Hawkeye fuel issues. If there is one that someone feels needs to be looked at please let me know.)

The Cause: My kid was running it a while back and caught a small tree just to the inside of the left front tire. The machine spun a quarter turn counter clockwise and tipped to the right ending up coming to rest on its right side. It was on its side for probably 30 minutes before I got to it and tipped it back.

The Result: It starts up normally but any throttle beyond half and it starts to bog (under load or in neutral). This machine has been running great with the exception of needing lots of choke and a long warm up in the winter. It tops out in the mid-forties.

What I've checked:
- The oil smelled a little gassy so that got changed.
- The air filter looks fine and the airbox appears to be intact.
- I changed the in-line fuel filter as it was due but there was no change in performance.
- An investigation around the carb didn't uncover anything obvious
- Spark plug is new within the last few months.

Questions:
- What would a sudden impact have an affect on that would cause this symptom?
- I'm assuming it's a fuel issue, should I be looking somewhere else?
- If I need to get into the carb, what should I be looking for? I've never taken one apart but this is as good a time as any to learn.

The machine is a 2007 with about 1,300 miles.

Thanks!!

Look at the coil wire! If the stick went far enough to hit it at all its probably broken right at the boot. Had simular symptoms on mine. No hit just boot is really brittle. Pop it off the plug and be sure all is good

Sounds like it may be running to rich, id check the needle in the carb if you are going to open it up

I'll take a look at that tonight.

Alright, here comes the confession - I've never taken a carb apart before... Any suggestions on how to go about this?

Does the choke cable move freely? Might have yanked the cable out of adjustment if the stick caught it. Also check the fuel shut off valve make sure it didn't get turned slightly to the off position. Or that nothing got bent or is pinched that might be restricting fuel flow.
