Default 850 starter problems

Any body have starter problems with there 850 or 550? I'm going on my 3rd one. This last one i pulled apart and found the brush's were shot. It's a junk china starter made by Hitachi. Do's any body know a place where a guy could get an after market one?

Have em on E-bay for $248 for the Hitachi along with the Caltric brand for $800!!?? Must be a hell of lot of difference! They show the same price for the for the EPS and standard 850 models. The description shows its sealed better than the OEM?? Hitachi along with Mitsuba used to be good Japanese starters but now like everything else most are made in China. I retired before we had any 850 starter problems so the other members may give you a little better input! OPT

Find someone to rebuild it. Plus they may know of a better replacement.

Thanks OPT ,Tony and Mud. Good thing its still under warranty. Hopfully they'll let me keep the old one. That way i can send it in for a rebuild. With this problem it would sure be nice to have a spare. We got to the stompingrouds this last week end and it didnt even make it of the trailer. But i had a spare to drive my Lt500r. And after 3 days of riding that i can hardly walk!!

That's crazy 3 starters already totally unacceptable . Problem's like this sure push buyers like me to stick with the 500 carb and recoil back up ( or go Yamaha ) . And why does Polaris keep changing suppliers as who every made my 08 starter did good it's been problem free in over 12,000 miles .

Mitsuba on the 500. Some will last the life of the machine without problems, some wont. OPT

Not sure if this will help but on a lot of other mud forums people are having problems. Some were saying if you wash your bike be sure to ride it around and let the motor get hot, this will help the starter dry out. They have that black rubber boot over it and some were saying that will also hold water in there, not just help keep it out. I have a 10 xp 850 and the fiance has a 550 no problems yet.

Just an update. I got my replacement starter the other day and it looks completely differnt.
I can smell possible recall. And it looks to me they even sealed it up better. The wire from the selenoid is even coated in rubber. Hopfully this will be the last replacement.

That's what the Caltric starter looked like on the picture(looked like it was dipped in plastic) sounds like Polaris is catching on a little OPT
