Default Polaris Xplorer 400 4x4

I was just wondering what everyone thinks about the Polaris Xplorer?

What are the good and bad things about it? I mean I really have no clue on what a good cheap utility quad should be.
I'm completely new at the utility quad world.

I'm looking at a 96 Xplorer 400 4x4. I really want a utility quad that is a 4x4 and has winch.

Thanks guys.
This is what I'm looking at:

Xplorer's are good machines...quick, fast, light and nimble. Just need some upkeep, generally with the chain drive, beyond that...keep fresh fluids in them, do a top end rebuild from time time and they should last.

That said...that machine looks/sounds like a POS for 1500!! No way I'd pay more than $500...even at that I'd find something different.

A quick CL search(5 minutes) to show what you can get for your money...while they may not all have plow/winch, judging from the xplorer you listed and the condition of not only it...but the winch and plow as well. You can pick up a used winch and plow for pretty cheap that are in a heck of alot better shape than the ones that come with that xplorer! There are a plile more than the ones listed below...keep your eyes open and a MUCH better deal than the xplorer listed will come along! Good Luck.

1995 polaris Sportsman 400
95 Polaris 300 4x4 w/ Plow
2003 Polaris Magnum 330 auto shift approx 300 miles
2005 ARCTIC CAT ATV
94 polaris trail boss 4x4 300
Honda 350 4x4
Yamaha Big Bear 4X4
nice 2004 Honda 350 rancher 4 wheeler electric shift
1994 Kodiak 400 4X4 & Plow

Thanks. I guess it really doesn't matter what brand of quad it is I just want atleast a 300 or bigger. What would you say is the cheapest utility quad? Those Xplorers seem like they are pretty cheap for being a 350. Preferably something under 2000 bucks.

in my experience buying atv's, the 3rd polaris looks like a turd. If the guy cant even clean it up to sell it, how much do you think he has really taken care of it over the time he's had it. The yamaha doesnt look terrible from the pictures but it may need some work it sounds like. The 2nd polaris definitely seems over priced and it will definitely need more maintainence with the chain drive. Unless its a sports quad the shaft drive is DEFINITELY the way to go...way less maintainence and more reliable. No title on the yamaha also scares me and the guy doesnt even know what year it is????? if it was me i would pass on all of these

One of my friends has an Xplorer 400 and it will outrun my Sportsman 500. Overall they're good quads but I don't know if the two listed are worth it. You can check KBB or NADA to see what they're worth.

I own a 1996 Xplorer 400 4x4, it is a great machine. Just needs upkeep. When you are not using the machine you need to stabilize it. Chains are strong. 4x4 works great. the only problems are the gearbox can wear quickly if you jerk them around (hard shifting). realitively easy to do a top end on them. I would recomend the xplorer but the price would have too be right! Very quick machine and plenty of power.....Good luck!
