Help! Sportsman 500 CV Joint problem...
Hi,
I'm new to the site and need help, as I'm attempting to change a ripped front CV Joint boot on my 2004 Sportsman 500. I can't get the outer cv joint housing off from the drive shaft. I've checked the inner housing of the outer cv joint (where the *****, race & cage is loacted) for a retainer clip of some sort - just not there, yet when I try to slide the joint off from the shaft it stops abruptly - I saw a clip on you tube where someone placed a wrench over the face of the cv joint - they then took a hammer and hit the top of the wrench to force the joint off from the shaft. I tried it with no luck - I'm afraid I'm going to damage something. I would appreciate any suggestions with getting this off as I want to take the ***** out to clean, relubricate and also get the boot on.
Thanks.

Welcome! The clip on the drive shaft (#7670092) may be distorted a little, but you need to rap pretty firmly on the cv joint base and it should separate from the shaft. I always just locked the cv shaft in a vice and while holding the cv joint, just tap it hard. If the clip is distorted replace it. Clean and grease up the cv joint, slide the new boot on the shaft , turn the cv joint on the shaft until you feel the splines mating up,then use a dead blow hammer or block of wood and hammer on the cv shaft end and knock it back on past the clip. Put the rest of the grease in the boot and install the clamps. OPT
