my 1997 sportsman 500 has no power and it only does 30mph and can't spin the tires at all. we put the carb off my dads 99 sportsman on mine to see if it was the problem and it worked great with that carb. we cleaned my carb over and over, cleaning all the jets and adjusting it, but still no luck. my dads a mechanic and it baffles him. do you think i need a carb rebuild? my dealer charges $85 an hour but i don't want to spend hundreds of dollars, how quick would they be able to find the problem?

 

Moose carb kits are a pretty complete kit and fairly reasonable. Moose Utility Division - Product Catalog The only thing that they don't supply in the kits are the float arm and float pin which a lot of people don't bother to replace. If the float arm is worn and wobbly best to replace it also as it can cause problems even after a carb rebuild. This place is about as cheap as any online for these two items. how long would it take a dealer to go through the carb and replace the worn parts?

 

Probably charge you between 1 to 1 1/2 hrs depending on the dealer PLUS dealer priced parts which are high! Kits are the best way for the do it your selfers,the only high priced item is the float arm assy on your model($45 at Cycle Parts Warehouse) IF the float arm assy is wobbly and worn and needs to be replaced.A lot of people tamper with this also,adjusting up and down when they have problems when just replacing it would solve a lot of the carb problems along with the carb kits. You can rebuild it for at least 1/3rd of the cost a dealer would charge. OPT
