03 Polaris Trail Boss 330 Thumping Noise
#1
On my polaris it makes a thumping noise. I have checked the drive belt and it looks fine. It still rides fine but it dosnt make the noise when idling. It feels like it is coming from the tranny but im not for sure. Any help would be appreciated.

Thumping noise could be "belt slap" on the cover from excess belt slack, plus did you make sure there was no separation on the belt itself?Other places noise could come from is chain/sprocket problems, chain guide noise, rear axle housing bearings, the internal "silent chain" may have stretched, jumping teeth on transmission gears, etc? You can place a straight edge across both clutches and pull down on the middle of the belt. If distance is more than 1 1/2" could be time for a new belt. Plus jack up the rear end and check for any axle play and also check that the chain slack is no more than 1/2". Hard to guess at noises you may be having without a little more detail. OPT

Easy to install a new belt. Just pull the clutch cover, pull up on the belt and roll it off the rear clutch. BEST to have the front clutch buttons and also the rear clutch ramp buttons checked out and replaced if needed. If they have never been checked out it's best to do it now before any clutch damage could happen. This a is just a basic video on how clutches work. There are other more detailed ones out there. If you don't feel comfortable doing this then best to let someone experienced check the clutches out. What you might pay now would be a lot cheaper than having to replace damaged clutches.

I charged 1/2 hr(about $45 at that time) labor to blow out clutch dust, inspect and replace belts. If clutch buttons need replaced then you're looking at more $. OPT

Just jack the atv up at the rear, turn the tires and check the sprockets for worn, broken teeth, chain for any up and down movement(stiff links) also for any movement in the axle(worn bearings in the rear housing) Plus chain slack shouldn't be more than 1/2"-3/4" measured from middle of the chain. Also check the plastic chain guide itself. It should be able to float up and down. OPT
