Default 2012 Polaris Sportsman 500 HO shutting off

I have a 2012 Polaris Sportsman 500 HO and I was trail riding the other day. While riding, it would suddenly shut off. A little later I was riding and heard a poping noise while turning. After I turned real sharp and tried to give it some more throttle, the atv would almost certainly shut off. Didn't seem like I was losing power or anything of that sort but just wander if anyone knows what could be going on?

Thanks!

If you have a key chain instead of just the ignition key only,it could be slightly turning the switch killing the engine when you make sharp turns. OPT

Yeah, anything key ring or anything on the key will hit the fuel cap and turn off the key. I guess it is sorta an orientation into the world of Polaris ownership. It's happened to us all. Welcome to the world of owning a Polaris.

Thanks for the info. As ridiculous as that is, I hope that is the problem. Still not sure what the poping noise was that I heard. Thanks again!

Just probably backfiring through the exhaust or airbox when the ignition was shut off. OPT

I had this same exact problem on my 500 that I bought 2 months ago. It turned out to be the throttle cable contacts inside the throttle box on mine. If you take your throttle and pull it forward or toward the fuel tank(instead of pushing outward with your thumb to give it gas), the machine should NOT quit. If it does, then it needs to be adjusted by Polaris. They should be adjusted correctly from the assembly process but that apparently does not happen all of the time. LMK if that is it but I bet it is. Mine would shut off when I turned the handle bars or I was going down hill. Got it adjusted and no more problems...

I am curious if it was actually the "key" issue. Just picked up a 2012 yesterday.

A lot of us would like to know also what he found was the problem Some people report back, often you never hear from them again. Their findings can help other people! This is the main purpose of the forum! OPT
