Guess that depends on the clamp. Several styles out there that can be tightened more with the proper tool than with a pair of pliers.

I never tried the aftermarket boots or bands, even oem seem to not cost that much from the dealer.

If you get a hold of the new stepless type clamps that came out in 2010 I think,this type pliers are a must as I tore up several clamps before I got a pair into the shop. One tough clamp even with the right tool. https://polaris.spx.com/Detail.aspx?id=338&cat=1&sub=27

Yeah, those ones are a real PITA with out the right tool. Even a good pair of needle nose pliers will slip off of those ones.
