Help! Cv boot tear
#5
Keep it out of the water. Just get it torn down and cleaned up really well. Check the old grease between your fingers. If the grease is gritty, you'll likely need a new joint. Maybe not though.
Disassemble the thing and clean it really well (I use a bucket full of diesel to clean parts with) and check out the wear on the parts. If it looks good, re-grease and reboot it.
When you reboot the joint, Make sure that the boot seats into the groove of the joint's outer race so the boot bellows are at the right spot so they won't hit the knuckle and tear again.

Not water, but kerosene or a good parts washer if the cv has any mud in it. Polaris boot kits are the best. The cv just taps off the drive shaft to be able to clean it properly and also to install the new boot kit(comes with grease pack) You need the pincher type cv band pliers (makes this job easy) or some have made there own. Keep track of the bearings, hilliard and armature plate as you remove the hub. Drop the a arm,tie rod end and just flex and pull the cv shaft out of the strut. This model has a flex nut and circlip on the shaft and has a "rolling torque listing",but usually 20 pounds torque should be good.
