I had a 97 Explorer400 before I got my Magnum
That atv will surprise you with speed my buddy has a Yamaha 350 Warrior and it would barely outrun my Explorer400 the one I had would run around 65mph & get it in a hurry I know that for a fact
as far as it out running a Scrambler 500 HO
that I can't say for certain because I never tried it but I would imagine gearing and tire size would have a lot to do with the out come
The only reason I sold mine to get the Magnum is that I got tired of having to adjust chains on the Explorer because the 97's where all chain drive but it is a great machine hell it even rides better than my Magnum because it has more suspension travel I guess that I just wanted the low end torqe of the 500 four stroke and shaft drive but I do miss
that awsome snap that the Explorer had win you nailed the throttle.

I had a '97 Xpress 400 that would do 64mph by two GPS's stock. I tried another GPS cause I didn't believe it. When the gears are slightly modified, I could easily reach 67 mph. I do not find it hard to believe that an Xplorer could out run a Scrambler on top end because of the bigger tires. I have a friend that has a Xpress 400. I raced him and barely out ran him on top end.

Thanks Motorman,
I guess I had better plan on getting one soon. My dealer also said it was a slow seller. For the guy who claims the 500 Scrambler is faster than the 400, I've only raced one and it was close but it could not beat the 400 I was riding. The only mods the 400 had was a speedo and rear hitch, the 500 was stock. I think these machines are so close you can't really call one faster than the other.

I've got a 00 Explorer 400. I know my speedo is probably not the most accurate thing in the world, but according to it I've had my machine up to 60 on pavement, and it got there in a hurry. I didn't push it farther because my neighbors were already pretty pissed off ( it was 10 p.m. ooops!). Anyway I won't do that again until I finish breaking it in..........then I'll post a top speed.

So far it has been a great machine. It has done everything I have expected from it and more. I think it is as perfect of a blend of sport and utility as one can find in an ATV. I am so far completely satisfied with my choice.

The 400 Xplorer is more or less a Scrambler with low range.Same motor, same chassis.
This is a much more versitile machine. You will also like the fuller body style if you like the water & mud.
