The best up grade I always say is tires, at one time Polaris put on higher end goodyear P-Trackers 6 ply with aggressive 3/4" lug on there Sportsman so it was not so much a issue.

Now they use basic ITP 489 3ply with a lug that's lucky to be 1/2" tall that look bald even when new.
Another good add on is a front brush guard that protects the headlights, the stock bumper does not give much protection in the thick of things.

Mine is a 2001 Sportsman and I got the OEM bush guard from the Polaris dealer.
Your 2012 would look like the pic above.
There sold almost everywhere,OEM or Aftermarket. The pic above is made by Moose.($215)

Moose does make good stuff. My friend just bought a 2011 800 Sportsman and the headlight pop right out going through brush that did not look to bad to us.
He bought the moose guard and can crash though any bush trail now without a care.

Grip and thumb warmers if you are planning on riding in the late fall and winter. If you find the front end too mushy, get a set of the Polaris heavy duty springs. I found on my previously owned Sportsman X2, that it not only helped clear the mushy feeling but also made the steering a little easier.

I forgot about that. I also had the HD stiffer springs installed. Front and back.
