99 scrambler 500 h.o!! Help plzz?!?!

Hey guys i have a 1999 polaris scrambler 500 h.o. my sister bought it new back in 99. wheeler has always been kept well takin care of and stored in a heated garage until about 3 yrs ago. she lost interest due to a divorce and the wheeler sat for 3 years. (Garage) last fall my dad bought it off her to help her with money. got it for 700.00. we put new battery, new tires, new brakes, new rear axle bearings, new rear caliper and pads. and cleaned it all up. We ran it for a few months and it runs good. Never had any issues with it and it runs pretty strong. My dad lost interest in it and just passed it onto me. I have been wanting this wheeler since the day my sister bought it new.
Im looking to see if anyone knows what a 1999 scrambler 500 should have for compression? The wheeler has about 4500 miles on the odometer and the odometer does work. I havent done a comp check yet but i will be doing one this weekend. Im just curious as to what i should have for compression. Also whats alot of miles for a 4 wheeler to have? 4500 miles sounds like alot to me but i could just be paranoid. I want to keep this wheeler in good running order. It doesnt knock and it starts right up with no problem. Any other info would be greatly apreciated thanks.

Don't be alarmed at the compression reading! The manuals state between 65 to 90 psi on average because it has an exhaust valve compression release on the cam to aid in starting. Most I think I've ever gotten is 100 psi after cranking over several times with the throttle wide open. If's it's been halfway taken care of 4500 miles isn't nothing compared to what some have on theirs!Either get a good hardcover service manual for maintenance and repairs OR here's a link for one to keep on the computer for reference. It goes to 98 models, but basically the same on maintenance and most repairs. Use only synthetic oil(0w40,5w0,10w50) my preference is Rotella T6 synthetic. Cheaper that a lot of the other oils and jaso motorcycle rated. Use Demand Drive hub fluid and Polaris AGL for the gear case. The manual goes into greater detail.Index of /ORV Manuals/Polaris/1996-1998 - All Models The only major problem on this year model was on some, not all 96 to 2000 model 500 engines, soft cam lobes were a problem. The manual will show you how to check the valve settings and goes into detail on a lot of items to check. Good luck with the Scrambler..

thanks man, i really apreciate the help. the only thing left to do to the wheeler as of now is the front cv axles.. when i got the wheeler the 4wd worked like it should but the cv axles were in rough shape.. the boots are torn pretty bad and i couldnt afford to replace the axles.. they can be bought for 100 bucks a pc or theres another option that costs 300 a pc. i didnt wanna buy the cheaper ones and have to do it all over again later down the road so i just waited. i took my son out riding one weekend and got stuck, eventually i got out, but now the thing jerks once in a while going down the road. almost like one of the axles is kinda locking up as it rotates. so i parked it. now im thinking about just removing the front axles so i dont mess anything else up just so i can ride until i can afford to fix it.. or i was also thinking of eliminating the whole 4wd system all together.. the places i ride are not really muddy or dont need the 4wd.. is this a good idea or should i just park it till i can afford to fix it? again i apreciate the help.. this site rocks..

Hard to really eliminate the awd as all the front hub internal parts have to be there to be able to tighten the hub nut whether they work or not! Plus even if the prop shaft is removed that goes from the gear case to the front diff to help power the awd,one side or another can still lock in unexpectedly! Just study the manual and save up to do it right on the boots, awd system, etc.

well i know some people just disconnect the middle part of the shaft and just use the outer part that goes in the hub. but i do hear what ur saying.. it was designed to have 4wd and i would like to keep it bt man 300 a pc for 2 shafts.. would it be cheaper to just rebuild the shafts?

You can find them cheaper on Ebay, etc, but normally if you replace the joints separately it costs more than buy a complete shaft assy. Check ot this link and see if it helps. Boot, axle items in CV Joint store on eBay!

Thanks man i took a look and found some replacement cv joints and boots and they were like 40.00 each on the low and 120.00 on the high side. But i also found some shafts complete for 100 a pc and 300 &up for the expensive ones. I may try to just get the whole shafts replaced. 200 is alot better then 600 so i may give it a shot. Im not jumping in 4x4 a d im not a crazy mud hole swimmer or anything. I take care of my stuff.
Another thing i was wondering is how often should i grease my fittings? I believe there are alot of them on an atv and i think i may have got them all but i may have missed some too. I apreciate all the help. Im kinda new to this but i will learn more as i go.

Manual says 50 hrs on greasing, but just depends on where/how you drive it. You may need to do it a little sooner or later if you wish.Use the link to the manual I gave you in an earlier post, will show you all maintenance and repair help that you need..

hey guys.. been a few days since i been on here but i got to play with the scrammy this weekend.. i got to do an oil change... man was it time.. glad i did it now.. the oil didnt look too bad but it was bad enough. cleaned her up real good went through it and checked alot of things. took it for a lil ride and holy momma, i dont remember it being this fun lol.. these scramblers are sick. it had been a few months since i got on it and drove it. i dont know if this makes any sence but ever since i did the oil change this wheeler haulssssss.. i dont know what happened over the passed few months but damn. feels like it has so much more power. runs really strong.. feels so light and peppy as all hell. i was amazed. i am going to bite the bullet and get new shafts for the front. i might as well keep the 4wd. i also found though that im going to need front a arm bushings, and the swing arm bushings felt just a lil tiny bit loose so im gonna order some of those asap, and the front tierod ends have some play. so i have a little list of stuff to get. but the wheeler runs perfect.
