2006 Polaris 850 bronken front axle

I've seen threads that talk about the newer ball joints and how they don't have a hole in them to be regreased through the grease zerk. Supposedly they don't ever need to be greased.
I've seen folks recommend drilling a hole in the top of the new ball joint to allow it to be greased with the zerk, but I'm concerned with getting pieces of the drilled out hole into the joint.
Is there any issue with drilling a hole into the new joint? I ride in a lot of mud and water and I just can't imagine this new ball joint lasting very long if I can't grease it regularly.
