Help troubleshooting a 06 Polaris sportsman 500 HO. Non efi
Hello,
I have a 2006 Polaris sportsman 500 HO. Non Efi
I was riding along the other day and the atv just quit almost
Like someone had reached over and hit the kill switch
It would not refire...after towing it back in then it decided to
Start but I really had to crank it awhile. But it will only idle,
If I give it any amount of throttle at all it kills.
I replaced the fuel filter, the fuel, the air filter and also the spark plug
And still the same situation.(for what it's worth, the Polaris dealer also rebuilt the carb about 8 hours worth of use
Before this problem arose). Does anyone have any ideas
On this one?
Thank you

Could still be a little trash in the carb or possible fuel pump problem. You can pull the fuel line to the carb and crank it over to see if fuel is pumping ok.If it is, it still could be a little trash or degraded fuel line pieces caused by ethanol in the fuel stopping up the main jet or blocking the needle valve .Couple other things off hand that I can think of is the ecm module starting to fail, even if it was replaced during the recall years. It can cause all sorts of problems. Huge ATV Recall by Polaris - Sportsman and Scrambler The other could be a pulse coil that may have dirt or trash on it or the flywheel. Remove the recoil cover and clean this area up. Resistance readings on the two pulse coil wires that go to the cdi should be 97 ohms(+ or - 20%) Pulse gap problems are something else that seems to happen on some 500s over time. Here's what one member encountered.http://forums.atvconnection.com/pola...ml#post3155476

Thank you for the info, I will start by looking into
These areas next. Do you know where I could
Buy a service manual for this atv?
Also, when checking the fuel pump, what kind of flow or pressure should I have that would be considered acceptable? Or is it a situation that the pump is either good or bad(flow or no flow)?
Thanks again

Here's a cheap 5 buck pdf service manual to help you on eliminating the problem along with future repairs and service. 2006 Polaris Sportsman 500 Service Manual PDF Download Fuel pump flow varies on each machine, but should have in most cases have a good steady stream.
