speedo needle swings wildly
#1
`02 sportsman 500. Went out for a ride and speedo was working until I got back. The needle was swinging all over while the machine wasn`t moving. The sensor is in place, any ideas?

Really takes a harness adapter kit and 9 volt battery to check the sensor properly, but you can check for any trash around the metal cap surrounding the speed sensor on the brake caliper plus check that the three pin connector wiring has continuity on each wire and no wires shorting out, especially the red and black to ground. Plus simply pulling a battery cable off or removing the sensor connector from the speedo for a minute or two may help "reset" it.

Disconnected battery, blew compressed air at the wheel speed sensor. Turned on ignition and 4wd light works while needle swings at random. Don`t care about speed reading but want 4wd function. What would you do next? The speed seems accurate while riding but the needle swings all over while stationary. Seen this before? Wish I knew somebody with a similar machine to try the wheel speed sensor if that`s a possiblility. Just bought a plow today and want to have reliable 4wd function.

If you're able to get a replacement hall effect speed sensor and it doesn't help on the random swinging of the needle,it could be in the speedo head itself. Too many functions are built into them now,The awd, limiter, etc. Here's one way some people have done on the awd problem other than jumping the speedo connector brown/white wire to a good brown(ground) wire.
