Anyone have any advise... I have to replace the steering post and am sure the gas tank has to be moved? Have all the body parts removed and handlebars disconnected... now what? (OK, I know I have to disconnect the tie rods yet) Can it be as simple as removing the bolts to the gas tank? what else will have to be moved/removed to slide the post out? And what is easier...up or down? no lifts Thanks in advance!

 

Yes remove the gas tank bolts and you can slide it back far enough to allow the bottom of the steering post up past it. Tight fit even if you do and be careful of damaging the brake hose right in the way. Check that the steering post bracket wasn't damaged/bent also. Most of the steering post bends happen right at this bracket mount and I've had to replace several of these. Plus being that you have to replace the post,I'd replace the bushings while there. Thank you OPT...thought you might be there. Post bracket? at the top or bottom? Isnt it welded at the bottom? If at the top I am replacing it all. And... the bushings at the top mount?? ...were rubber, new ones hard plastic... got those too. Hope this is it! Thanks a bunch! will see...

 

The steering post bracket at the top is bolted into the frame with two short carriage bolts and nuts. It may or may not be bent,but best to fit the bushings into the bracket and see if they fit snug especially at the rear of the bracket that's contoured to hold the bushings tight. If the bracket is bent out of shape in this area there could be slack in the steering post once assembled using one that's bent. That's why I kept a few of these in stock along with the bushings.Just click on the link that I posted.
