2000 Polaris 500 cc HO Oil Change

You can see the crankcase bolt from
the right side looking thru the small hole for the manual rear brake. If you lay on your side there you can feel for the bolt and see a small portion of what you are doing thru that brake hole. I like to remove it and drain because it drains for a long time, like 20 mins, yes small amounts but its not a drop by drop thing, its a small thin steam for minutes, enough for a beer or two. I feel like this removes even more of the last small crud stuff.
OK here is a question for OPT: on an older machine ('98) that is new to me should i remove/clean the oil screen? I was thinking of doing it just this once. On my newer '10 sporty it can out clean as a whistle so i won't bother with it or the even crazier priming procedure.

If you want to drain the sump that way it's fine. As far as the screen,if the machine is new to you then yes I'd pull the tank screen for peace of mind especially on the older models.Use teflon tape or liquid pipe sealant on the threads when reinstalling.Don't forget to clamp off the tank vent line close to the fitting when ready to restart so the oil pump can prime faster.Leave it clamped for a couple minutes then kill it. Most cases you'll hear a hiss of air from the line when you remove the vice grips.
