Default 2002 Polaris Sportsman 700 Transmission fluid change

guys.

went to change my trans fluid today on my bike i picked up in the spring. Only thing I hadn't changed yet was the trans, but I had checked it and looked good.

Well changed it out, some metal shavings on the plug which i hear is normal and looks like it was time for a change, but all the manual says 13.5 ounces, well, that doesn't even get close to the bottom of the fill hole. Doing some deductive reasoning (i had the left over fluids from the previous owner), looks like it got filled to the bottom of th whole when he had it so probably 3/4 of an inch or an inch down from the top. According to the manual says it should be 1 inch and 5/8, which would make sense for the 13.5 ounces.

So here is the question. Ive seen fill it to the bottom of the whole and the manual says only 13.5 ounces. Now I've seen lots of conflicting information in other parts of the polaris manuals for my 700 so i take it all with a grain of salt.

That being said, he obviously ran it for a while with over the "recommended" amount of fluid, and I filled it more than the 13.5 ounces as well.

Question being, does it really matter? i assume thats a bit of extra drag on the gears but guessing it shouldn't be an issue. or do i need to drain a bit? I ran it for a good 14 hours since I've had it with it filled from previous owner and i know its been a while since he did it before that.

Thanks.

Just fill it to the bottom of the fill plug threads. If you're a tad over wont hurt as you do a have a vent tube at the top of the transmission. Use only Polaris AGL or oil suitable for chain driven gear cases.

OPT, thanks as always! Man 4:21 AM your up early!

I assume the idea is that the chain at least slaps in the oil? or does it need to be completely covered? Just from an understanding standpoint.

Chain is not fully covered, just part of it.If it was you'd have oil running out of the vent tube.In fact you have two silent chains in this transmission.http://www.cyclepartswarehouse.com/f...2002&fveh=5601
