Default AWD engagement issues '98 magnum 425 4x4

My 1998 magnum 425 4x4 will not stay engaged when in forward gear. If I push the gear lever slightly further in forward and hold it, the AWD indicator light will come on and the AWD system will work properly. Once I release pressure on the gear lever the AWD indicator light turns off and the front wheels no longer turn. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Common problem on this as the parts in the gear shift box wear and it can't provide constant pressure against the gear position switch which triggers the awd. Usually works ok in awd in low range or reverse with the over ride button pushed in. Forward is the main problem as it's used the most. If you don't want to tear into the shift box replacing parts, you can move the grey wires on the terminal board to the red/white terminal section. This jump allows awd,but power is constant to the hub coils which after awhile can cause problems itself in magnetized armature plates, etc.Dirt Cheap Yamaha, Honda, Arctic Cat & Polaris OEM Parts & Accessories – Cycle Parts Warehouse
