The belt on my 1999 300 x-plorer makes a knocking sound when idling in neutral. Is this normal or is the belt worn?

Just had the same problem last week. Get a new belt. You may notice a power lose somewhere too until you get a new one.

By knocking sound do you mean it is hitting the plastic clutch cover? If so, there are washers behind the clutch by adding or taking away, I can't remember which (a friend of mine did it for me) you can adjust the tension on the belt.It worked on mine.If no one else replys I will find out.

If its more of a "metallic" knock... There is a bushing in the cover plate for the primary clutch... They tend to wear out and cause the clutch to "knock"... Cheap and easy to fix... I think the bushing is about $1.00....

Just got the Scramble rout after a very long winter. Upon starting the machine for the first time this spring some "stuff" flew out of the clutch cover. After that I had a knocking at idle and some minor vibration at speed from the PVT. So i took the cover off only to find a mouse had made my ride his home for the winter. He must have gotten hungry at some point cause he ate half way through my belt, hence the vibration. What are ya gonna do?

Well if the mouse is still inside you clutch cover,, Easy fix take your Deer rifle and run about 20 rounds into the cover, that should damn near kill the rodent. Or just leave him in there and that way you can really wind up the mice for more power LoL.

I just replaced my belt with a power streak from goodyear. I noticed the goodyear belt is a bit heavier. Ive never had any knocking or tapping sounds until now. The new belt was a bit "tighter" I figured this was due to the old belt being stretched during use. In forward gear it will crawl forward now where as before it would not move until I gassed it. In nuetral if I rev the engine a bit as the RPMs are coming down I will hear a tap or knocking sound but only for a split second. Is there something more that needs to be adjusted with a new belt or is this just the sound a new belt makes until it has "broken in".

I also replaced my PVT belt yesterday with the factory Polaris belt. It is a little wider and shorter than the old belt. I thought that this was normal from streaching and wear though. After I put the new belt on I cannot stop with my explorer in gear or it will stall. I nutreal it is fine but in any gear it will stall if I stop. I was reading in the book where you can add shims to the drive pully and it will gove you more slack in the belt. Has anyone tried this or know if it will keep me from stalling.
