If you were about to do an engine rebuild it may not have anything to do with what you took off.. It may have decided it was time not to run for some strange reason.. I'd proceed with what you planned on doing and just take it one step at a time..

Pull the line from the fuel pump leading to the carb and crank the engine over. Should be a steady or pulsing stream of fuel if pump is working ok and at least getting fuel to the carb. Plus look at the simple things like a fouled plug, etc. Plus just retrace your steps. Sometimes the answer will hit you between the eyes..

Pull the lowest line on the carb closest to the clutch.

With the engine off the slide isn't going to move when you give it throttle, only the butterfly valve will. Once started the slide works off engine vacuum and moves according to how much throttle is applied and engine vacuum it receives.

oh ok dident know that lol last quad i owned was a 1985 yamaha moto 4 and the carb was totally diffrent ...

anyway i fixed the problem not sure how all i did was take the carb off removed the black boot cleaned the surface put the boot back on and tightend it down the best i could without stripping the allen bolt and put the carb back on tightend that strap as tight as it would go and i put my hand at the back of the carb again and pushed the button and it fired right up guess i dident tighten the boot all the way or somthing lol thanks for the help though much appreciated

to anyone who has a similar issue make sure u tighten things down properly or youll end up like me confused lol...

also was reading online that polaris uses a pulse fuel pump as u said above and that when the lines go dry it creates a vacume lock or somthing like that so maby thats what had happend

All the 500 engines have to have the air box and filter on to even crank up and run right. Air leaks around the intake or carb are about the same as pulling the air box. Glad you found the problem. Yes it even affects the pump as engine vacuum drops.
