Default '97 scrambler 400 clutch won't release

Hello and thanks in advance for any advice. I have the opurtunity to buy a 97 polaris scrambler 400 4x4. The owner says it runs and drives great except when you come to a stop it dies just like if you came to a stop in a manual trans vehicle and didn't push in the clutch. He also said you have to push the bike and then put it in gear. It sounds to me like the clutch is out of adjustment (if possible??) or it has failed are there any adjustments or anything I should look for short of replacing clutch??
Thanks again

Sounds like the clutches are trashed especially the rear one as it transmits power to the gear case. You can find clutches all day long, but I'd be worried about the gear case if he's been doing this for some time.Hard on them to slam in gear. Plenty more atvs out in better shape and less hassle to work on than the 400. My two cents I'd pass.

Against my better judgement i pulled the trigger on this atv only because i got it for next to nothing. Anyway i got it home and and pulled clutch cover off.
On the primary clutch I found there is a bearing or a bushing out of place and wedged beneath one of the clutch "fingers", It appears to be wedged in such a way that its not allowing clutch to go to its full release position as in it can't move all the way towards engine. Also the outer housing has a large crack in it. Im thinking it may be better to buy a complete primary clutch. Does anyone no any companies that remanufacture them id rather not put a used ebay one on iff possible.
Thankyou for any help!

Counter weight lodged against the shaft because the bushings are worn out. Have had plenty of those come in. Yes the clutch is trashed if it's cracked. Still your best bet to find any decent non ebs Polaris clutch on ebay and rebuild it.Doesn't matter what model or year it came off of as all will work on your machine. You can use your counter weights if the one on the used clutch are different. If you can save your rear clutch by replacing the ramp buttons even better. While you're at it I'd get a good manual if you attempt to rebuild them yourself. Does take some special tools on the front clutch.
