Default Igniton?!?!?!

I have a question about my machine,

I still haven't been able to get my Sportsman started.

I haven't gotten any closer than I have when I first stopped running over a month ago!!

BUT: Is the stator required for ignition?

Correct me if I am wrong:

But the purpose of the stator is to recharge the battery on the machine when running. But the stator isn't required to start the machine???

And is the voltage regulator also required for the machine to start?

Let me know,

Thanks.

Stator has an ignition coil, charging and lighting coils.Yes the regulator is responsible for charging and has 12 volts to the red wire. The battery and regulator in a sense needs each other to function properly for lights, charging, fan, etc. You don't say what model you have, but the older models had a magneto triggered ignition system meaning that they got the ignition source directly from the stator, the later models changed to dci ignition meaning they had to have a good battery for ignition. On older models if the regulator or battery is bad you can still pull start one. Not so on the newer models. Again what model you have would help.
