Tach works when cold stops when warm

Tach works when it wants.. once the engine is hot, it reads anywhere from 0 to 250 RPM and fluctuates from there. It will read normal for about 1 or 2 minutes on start up.
I replaced the stator and pickup a while back and its never worked right since.
Could it be a air gap issue from the pickup?
Next question.
Last week I had the bike in the air, all 4 wheels off the ground, running the transmission testing the 4WD operation..
The right rear CV came apart (wheel side)
I took it apart and found that the CV Cage for the ***** was broken in half.
It was broken closer to one side of the cage than the other, like 1/4 to 3/4. Meaning one side was thicker than the other. Everything else seemed fine.
I cleaned everything up and reassembled the CV with new grease and put the thicker part of the cage towards the open end of the CV to give it more surface area to retain it.
I should note that I inspected the cracked area very well and it looks as though its been broken for quite a while. You can tell by how the edges of the broken section were worn and rounded.
I deburred and checked mating and figured I would give it another go.
I'm not expecting long life from it, but wondering what would cause the cage to break in the first place?
And is that the clicking noise that you hear from these things??
Thanks in advance for the input.

Pick up air gap shouldn't be the cause of gauge malfunction. Pull the speedo harness and plug back in to see if resets and works right. Maybe just a coincidence and speedo may have started to have problems at the same time. Common problem on these digital speedos having problems. Here's couple posts on people repairing theirs.KA7OEI's blog: Repair of the speedometer on a Polaris Sportsman 500 4-wheeler AWD and Speedometer don't work - Page 2 - ATVConnection.com ATV Enthusiast Community Cage breaking is usually from two things. Either excessive stress on the cv joint or the cage may have had a factory flaw that caused it to crack. Plenty of drive shafts on ebay from economy brands to Sixity,Monster,Gorilla, etc you can choose from.
