On this model the the serial # is on the right frame front down tube along with the model W97. You've got most of the things down to be serviced, but a good service manual is still best.http://visit.tradebit.com/visit.php/...75/264163234/9If counter balancer fluid looks milky then water pump seals are leaking and need to be changed. Plus if you flush the coolant and you don't bleed the 10mm bolt on top of the head, trapped air bubbles can cause the engine to overheat quickly and blow a head gasket. That's covered in the manual that a lot of people over look..

Bought the service manual, changed all fluids, bled the coolant. Took it for a spin down the alley and seized the motor. Pulled plug and there was a tiny metal piece stuck in plug, I assume ring. What the he'll went wrong. I have never take a motor apart, am I in over my head to pull to top end off?

It happens... Pull the cylinder and check how nuch damage. If the rod has any up and down play(side to side ok) will need and new rod kit, crank bearings and seals along with a new bore job and piston and gaskets. Then since you're that far, will need new water pump seals (2) and bearing.. Can be costly on a 400 if the engine goes south on you.Just depends on what all's damaged, but if mine,no way I'd just do a top end on a 18 year old machine. Here's an example of all 3 engine cases.http://www.cyclepartswarehouse.com/f...98&fveh=286185

Definitely wouldn't trust the bottom end now. You'd never get all the trash from the lower needle bearing, crank bearings. Imo a waste of money if you just do a top end repair as many have found out. Rod kits are on ebay along with oversize piston and gasket kits. A good machine shop can install and true the new rod along with boring out the cylinder. Just depends if you want to spend the money. Just check around at what places would charge. That is with you bringing the crank and cylinder in and you installing the new parts.Costs on this old model would be high if you farmed out the whole thing to a shop.
