Default How to remove lower speedometer cable

We are removing the transmission.
But cannot get this cable off the bottom. Any ideas

The second picture shows why the tranny needs to come out. Brand new chain ,master link, broke.

Either stand it on it's tail end to be able to get to the cable or just remove the cable at the speedo and pull the whole thing out with the gear case. These older models had very little room to work with.

You don't have to pull the gear case all the way out. Just enough to get to the cable, then let it lay loose. You do enough of these things over the years and you eventually learn not to fight it..

The speedometer cable is loose now, not off yet.

But this big bolt is stopping me now. The one with the nut loosened off. What is it?

Loved that bolt too.. This is a gear case stabilizing bolt that snugged up to the frame. To remove you have to loosen the lock nut screw the bolt in,have some room and unscrew the bolt and nut out all the way. Remember to reinstall this bolt when you start to place the gear case back in the frame, have it screwed all the way in.Once the gear case is in place and bolted down, unscrew the bolt until it barely touches the frame member, then turn 1/2 turn more then tighten the lock nut. This bolt kept the gear case from wiggling around. Possible though that you may be able to loosen the lock nut all the way, screw the bolt all the way in and have room remove the gear case. Some models you could do that way, others you had to remove the bolt completely.I just removed them all and threw them in the parts box. Only took me once to forget to reinstall the bolt first and had to lift the gear case back out.No room to screw it in if you do.

Thanks
Once the speedometer cable is off then it is possible to wiggle the tranny to just the right position to get that bolt out. Then the tranny came out ok on the right side.
So much fun.

Yes you can **** the gear case sideways after removing all the bolts and lifting it up to have enough room to remove this stabilizer bolt and nut. I've pulled gear cases out of the right side, left side and also wiggled them up through the top of the frame. Every year model seemed like it was different on the best way to get a gear case out of the frame.
