I've been trying to get some more power out of my '99 Xplorer 400, and I've decided to look for an aftermarket pipe to bolt on. I've done just a little looking, and have found that HotSeat makes a pipe for Xplorer 400s that claims to add 8-10 hp at an RPM of 6500, 700 more than stock max power. My first question is, would I be able to put this pipe on and see at least some of these horsepower gains without doing any clutchwork and rejetting, and if not, what kind of work are we talking about? Spring changes/simple clutchwork I can do... rejetting is another story...

Also, is there perhaps a better pipe manufacturer that I should go with? I'm not exactly extremely mechanically inclined, so I'm aiming for something that's not gonna require a lot of extra work.

Finally, would I see some slight gains with a K&N filter without any other work, or will I have to rejet? I'm not looking for a TON of power, just something to spice the engine up a bit, and make things more interesting.

I have an 95 xplorer 400 with the following additions: AAEN pipe and silencer(mid and low end pipe about $200) went to a 200 jet ( it's easy to remove, use a metric wrench -$3), turned the air screw on the carb 2 full turn from closed, Boyesen Power Reeds (two stage -$29) big difference in throttle response, use a UNI dual stage foam filter - $30, changed main spring to the next one up from stock- engages at high rpm's - makes it work better trail riding. Replace the factory chain tensioner with an aftermarket one- this will save your chain. I got most of my parts at Ritter Cycle- they are very helpful with questions.

Rick Ritter [618-644-3211]has a HDP pipe and a stock Scrambler silencer that will make a huge differance in performance.Yes,you will have to re-jet,it is very easy to do.You will also at least want to change your primary clutch spring.Call Rick,he is a hell of a guy and even a greater person to deal HP parts with.
