Yeah that is what I am doing When I take it apart the spring is still in both #2 holes, and yes those bushings make it stick sometimes even when it is on the bench and I am hand-testing it. Maybe I need to suck it up and get the kit and do it all The rest is pure metal/mechanical so not much to go wrong there.

Also, is the torque on the bolt special? I read 15 ft lbs, but it is a spline shaft so I don't think it'll matter as long as it is tight.

15 pounds is right but not that critical. Look at the 8:45 mark on this video on a 570 driven clutch that basically is the same as your's. Stronger springs that require the tool,but assembly,clocking is the same.

Thats how I am putting it together, and when I am done it pulls back if you turn the outer sheave. My guess is those bushings are shot as well as the buttons.

Didn't you at least replace those cracked buttons...?

Not yet. Is there a chance that the helix is jumping over the buttons? They are worn down a bit, so between that and the bushings that could be it.

THAT'S the problem... REPLACE those things and be done with it...

Do those bushings come out with a press or how is the best way to replace them??
