As said before, every machine is different. Also as OPT stated, much depends on tire type and size, wear, weight, how YOU want the machine to perform in different conditions. That's why toe setting recommendations are given as a range of settings. It is a personal preference type thing just like tire pressure, handlebar angle, lever placement, shock settings etc. but most all 4x4 machines are recommended to be OUT to straight in line. When you toe in most machines will steer quick but can get very squirrelly which can lead to an inadvertent rollover if you're not very careful. Being out makes the machine more stable and is probably the reason Honda ships them up to 2" toed out...LIABILITY!

 

My owners manual called for 1/4" toe out on my Diesel. It would rip the bars out of your hands , off road in the rocks, also didn't feel safe on the asphalt at 40 mph. Just by playing around (it took a while) found the sweet spot. I suspect having 28" Outlaw MST tires amplified the bad characteristics off road, until I found the sweet spot.
