I just bought a 99 sportsman and was wondering what kind of oil everyone else is using and why. Also wanted to know if everyone is using Polaris oil filters or is the a quality automotive filter that will do the job.

I got a good deal on some mobil 1 15w-50, $15 for a 5 quart jug. Is anyone else using it?

I was using Polaris oil & filters but a filter costs around $18.00 CAD and the oil is around $8.00 Ltr. From now on I will be installing a Fram filter PH6607 $4.00 from my local auto parts supplier. As for the oil I intend using Polaris's oil 0W40 synthetic during the summer and Petro-Canada 0W30 semi-synthetic for the winter. Both oils are of good quality but I like the 0W30 in the winter because of the colder temps.
Hope this is of some help.

I use the Polaris synthetic oil. $ 5.25 per quart at my dealer the filter is also the Polaris filter it cost $8.50 . The guy above must be from Canada the prices seem awful high that he gave. I used Quaker state 10w 30 full synthetic in my 425 Magnum with good results to never had any problems .

I am very new to this.
Why all the use of synthetic oil.
If you change oil frequently, is the
the synthetic needed?

In a previous topic entitled SP500 maintenance, a member replied that he used Fram PH6017A filter. I see that dformsto uses Fram PH6607 filter. Do these 2 filters just happen to be interchangeable or is there a typo?

I've got a 2000 325 Magnum and use the Fram PH6017a oil filter and Mobil 1 0-50W synthetic.
I use the synthetic because I feel it provides better protection on my $4700. investment...my 2 boys like to rap it out and drive it as fast as they can, hell, so do I.

I posted the comment on the maintenance topic about using Fram PH-6017A, the dealer I use was selling a none Polaris filter for my SP-500. On the box that the filter came in, Fram PH6017A was the replacement. I use 5wt-30 Royal Purple synthetic motor oil and Syntec 75wt-90 gear oil in the tranny to help with the noise.

Thanks for all the info. I'm new to the site and made this post before I found out the old posts could be searched.

I picked up another jug of the Mobil 1, but I got 5w-30. Figured it might be better with cold weather coming on.
