Default New top end now won’t idle

Just put a new top end in my 2002 polaris Scrambler 400 2-stroke. The water pump seal went bad and lost all my coolant and overheated the engine and melted a piston. Got it all back together and it started up and runs great but I can’t get it to idle at all! If I let go of the gas it just dies. If I give it any choke it dies. If I hold the throttle just a touch it will idle perfectly. I’ve messed with the carb idle screw but it isn’t effecting anything. Any help is appreciated!

How long was it sitting while doing the rebuild and did you drain your carb? I'd give it a good cleaning (specifically targeting the idle (pilot) jet that sits deep inside under the bowl) and see if that does the trick. Just be careful getting it out as they are known to strip if you don't use a very good fitting (and small) screwdriver...

Where is the idle (pilot) jet located?

Inside the bowl, next to the main jet, but inside the casting. The main jet is a brass screw with a hole in it (can't miss that). You will need a very good fitting small screwdriver to get it out...good luck...
