Starter Grinds; 2017 Sportsman 570
#1
Hello group,
I searched thread and mostly came up with starter issues on older models.
I am wondering if there are any known issues with these. When I try to start, it will occasional "grind". If I retry it will catch and start. The grinding has been getting worse to where I have to try a few times for it to catch and turn over. Another thing, mostly when cold if I give a slight amount of throttle, it will 'pop', die and simultaneously make a laud gear clashing noise as the motor comes to a stop. The 'clashing' when it dies and grinding when starting sound similar. Could they be related on this model ?
Thanks,
Axle

This unit had chipped/broken starter gear, starter idler gear & starter one way clutch was also replaced. Dealer claims starter gear damage was caused by engine stalling and high compression 'kicking' back the starter gears (that are always engaged) as the engine stalled & stalling caused by low fuel pressure and faulty fuel pump. Bought this late fall year prior and even though out on time (almost 1 year old), with only 20 hrs & 70 miles Polaris stepped up and covered all under warranty.
My thanks to Polaris for recognizing this and fixing the machine.

Please help !!
So the dealer went to bat and got this covered under warranty, yet after just a couple of rides (less that 2 hours) the problem is re-occurring. Starts fine cold, but somewhere between the first 5-15 minutes of riding if I stop and change direction, when I push the throttle to go, the engine stalls. The stalling is not a problem for me, but what seems to be happening is when it stalls, as the piston comes around either the compression alone, or due to plug firing before TDC the engine kicks back (momentarily reverses direction) which engages the starter one way clutch. Due to the weight of the starter, this 'kick back' seems to be damaging the starter drive gear, idler gear and one way clutch. The dealer has been amazing and just replaced all these parts even though it was technically out of warranty. I believe they also did the fuel pump thinking it may be related to the stalling. Now I have only ridden it 2-3 more times, it has died and kicked back twice and now the starter is making noise again. Wheeler has less than 100 miles it total
I cant be the only one out there with starter/one way clutch issues.
Thanks !
