Default Reverse gear on 97 Trailboss

So I have a noobie question so be easy on me. I have a 97 Trailboss 250 that I bought pretty recently. I starts and runs well but seems to have a mind of its own when it will shift into reverse. I'd say every 3rd or 6th time it'll actually shift into reverse when I attempt to do so. So here's the question, when shifting from forward to reverse is it normal to brake then shift into neutral then shift into reverse ? I certainly don't try to slam it into reverse when I am in a forward motion but should I let the motor wind all the way down to an idle before shifting into reverse ? I've tried different ways and this atv just goes into gear whenever it feels like it seems. There's no repeatable action I can do to know when it'll go into gear (rev) or not. I'm going to probably have to mess with the shift linkage I guess. Thanks in advance for ANY ideas.

All Polaris ATVs except Xpeditions need to be stopped and idled down to change gears. That means Low too on ATVs that have it. But you shouldn't need to put it in Neutral. Like the Trailblazer I had, it went all the way from Reverse to Drive and back with no stopping in Neutral. Ever.
