I would look for some nuts with holes for safety wire and wire the nuts together. Also as a note, Loctite will work in the threaded portion, but on a nylock nut it will totally defeat the purpose of the nylon if it is applied to it.

My problems are with the 2001 Scrambler 500 4X4. And, yes it is coming loose on the right side. My dealer just called Polaris (Scrambler is still under warranty) and they are sending new bolts. Don't think it will do any good, though.

Thanks for the info. I'll have to give your fix a try.

My fix works on the older non-concentric drive machines. My new Xplorer is a 99 and the concentric drive, and so far is still tight. Since it stayed tight, I never really looked into whether or not the fix I described will work.

My Xpress was the older style and worked loose 2 or 3 times until I re-worked it as above. The most you have to lose trying it is the bolt and nut.

I recommend the all-steel locknut because it holds better than the Nylock, plus has more threads where the loctite will hold.

I even considered at one time drilling a small hole through the nut & bolt after tightening, and driving in a roll pin to keep it tight, but was afraid the hole might weaken the bolt, as on my machine the end extended into the tranny housing a little ways.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think I'm gonna try welding a washer on to the new bolts and bending it over once it is tight so that it can't unscrew. Also, I want to drill a hole in the swingarm, tap threads into it and put a grub screw in to hold it from backing out.

Any comments?

I just had the same problem on my 2000 Scambler 500. The left swingarm bolt loosened up. I locktightened it and it came loose again. So, I disassembled it and looked at the parts to see if I could figure out what's going on. Looks like when they loosen up, it provides some margin for some play to develop within the bolt and bushings. The only REAL solution is to replace the bolts and bushings that are worn, then used RED loctite to put the whole thing back together. If you don't buy a new one, most likely you will continue to have the same problems. My left side cost be about $40 for the bolt and two bushings.

I had the same problem with my 400 scrambler, when the bolts came out it snapped my poor chain. What I ended up doing was drilling the bolt and then safety wiring it to keep it in place. I have given it a good workout since then and everything seems to be fine. I hesistated to use the locktight because if you use the permanent one you will have to use a whole lot of heat to get it out if need be.
