does 4 wheel drive work in reverse??
#1
i was just talking to one of my buddies, and he was telling me how him and a couple guys went riding this weekend, and one of them has a 400 explorer. he said that they were all playing around by this river and they all got stuck, and the one with the explorer got stuck too. i said "wow, even brian got stuck with the 4x4?" and he said "yeah, well he couldn't back up, the 4 wheel drive doesn't work in reverse." he said that it worked, but it seemed like it was acting like a limited slip almost, the front wheels would spin, and then they wouldn't. hmmm, anybody have an answer to this? maybe he has a problem with his 4 wheel drive.

Last September a bunch of us went to one of the few registered ATV Trails in Newfoundland - Point Rosie ATV Trail.
Three Polaris (including mine) went playing in a very wet mud hole. Just as we were about to finish up all three of our bikes had no reverse 4x4 and the rev limiter cut in limiting the power to the rear wheels. When we finally got back to civilization my two buddies took their machines to the Polaris dealer only to find out the override button was dirty. $60 later they were both cleaned and on their way.

After 600 miles a mud & water & dust, my switches were getting dirty and it didn't start really smooth. I took the switch apart on the handle bars and cleaned it all out, and put it back on. It worked as good as new. If I could get paid $60 do that, maybe I need to look into getting a job at a Polaris shop.
And 100's of miles later, the problem hasn't come up again.

I race my Scrambler 500 in the woods and find I need full power/rpm in reverse without the hassle of pressing the overide button. If you look at your wiring diagram in the owners manual you will see that it is a five minute job to give the 4wd selector button a permanent ign. feed so that the overide button is redundant.(Swap the spade connectors around on the main board). While you are at it disconnect the rev. limit wires and watch the mud fly in reverse!
