I was wondering if anyone has had any problems with their 500s? I bought mine new in June and it never made the power I thought a new one should make. Took it back to the dealer and he said the filter was dirty. It would then run about 50mph on level ground, but take forever to get there. Two weeks ago it took a turn for the worse. Would not run more than 20mph. Took it to the shop and in 2 days they found the problem and fixed it in 2 more. It had a hole in the carb diapham about 1/2" long. They fixed it and put a k&n on it and now it is so storng it scares my wife. Before it would not outrun her honda 300 2wd, but now it will smoke it. I figure the hole was always there and it just got bigger. If anyone else has had this problem I hope this helps.

That sounds like a freak problem, never heard that one before but will make a note of that in case I ever see one come through the shop like that. I have the Magnum 500 and it has been flawless for 1300 miles, best all around ATV I have ever owned including the 3wheelers.

Kagey, I was just wondering, I read alot of your posts and you seem very knowledgable on the polaris ATV's I own a 300 express and in the spring I am getting a new 4WD and keeping the 300 for my wife, tell me the reason you chose a 500 mag over a 400 exp.?? I would appreciate your insight on the big difference and will the 500 perform like the 400 as it breaks in??

Its a kind of unusual story ,me ending up with a 500 Magnum. I had a 300 4x4 1994 model It had been a great Quad but had over 4000 miles on it and I was getting the new quad fever,so I gave the 300 to my wife and bought a 425 magnum. The magnum was stolen last year and when the insurance paid of (I have really good farm insurance)I went to get a new 425 like the one I had but they didn,t have any more so I got the 500 by adding only $800.00 to the insurance payoff. If I had been spending my own money I would have likely bought the Explorer 400 4x4 ,I feel that this Quad is one of the best buys on the market. Its a real hot rod there are many of them around here , I love to ride them every chance I get. They are a lot sportier to me than the 500 Magnum but I like the Magnum as a good all around machine I have been pulling a trailer hauling dirt with it all day today . The 400 is great a lot of bang there for your buck. If you like to kick dirt in the air and powerslide you will like the 400. As for the 500 breaking in ,My expierince tells me that what you have when you take it home is pretty well what you get. As for the 400 it seems to really get stronger as you put a few miles on it. Good luck on your purchase!!!
