Got my sp500 stuck in the mud today. I was trying to pull my buddy out on his 300 AC. Another buddy with a winch got both of us out.

Anyway, how big a winch do I need? What should I expect to pay for the winch and all the accessories that go with it?

If this was the first time you got stuck I would say all you need is a Warn 2000. If you are a hardcore mudder with a pretty high budget then I would say get the Rule 3300.

I have decided to get a 30,000 lb.(no typo) winch for my quad.

Get real!

A Warn A2000 is plenty adequate. If you want to double your pulling power and add flexability, also get a ******-block. ATV ****** block is only about $30 (I just bought one for $33 last weekend).
A bigger winch is just wasted money, higher current draw, and more weight on your atv.

How do you steer that thing, Boner??

I use the handle bars. The winch I am tlking about is says that it can pull a 30,000 lbs ROLLING LOAD or a 5800 lb boat on a trailer. There is a 6,000 and 20,000 lb version but for a 100 bucks more(than the 6000 pounder) I get 12 more feet of cable that is 1/4", compared to 3/16, and a garantee that I will get out. The reason I am geting it is because it is only $200 and I can move in to the front if I want(it mounts on the ball).

Some time there isn't enough cable for a ****** block. My freind with a 450s that HAD a 1500 lb winch on his quad got stuck and he didn't even have enough cable to reach the nearest tree, so how would he reach the tree with half as much cable when using the ****** block.

P.S. He was luck that I was there to go to his house and get a rope to pull him out. Sadly the rope broke 3 times and broke his head light but we did get it out after about 20+ jurkes with me (150 pounds) and my uncle(about 230) on my Arctic Cat 500. For a while my uncle thought that we were going to have to use his truck to get him out.

I think the warn 2000 is the very minimum of what you need. I have talked to 3 Sportsman 500 owners all say that the 2000 barily does the job and in one case it didn't. If I was you I would get the 2500 over the 2000. It's more powerful, has a 6 foot cord so you can get off you quad while it's winching it self out, and it's not to much more than the 2000.

My buddy has a warn 2500 on his sportsman 500. We got it stuck really bad one day so i tried to pull him out with my 400 Xplorer. We both sat on my ride while I gased it..didnt even budge it..my tires just spun. We then hooked his warn to a tree and it pulled it out like it was a freakin toy truck..very impressive.
I just put a super winch ATV 2000 on mine and after using it a couple of times Im sure it is all i will ever need. I bought mine at jegs www.jegs.com for $191 and a mount kit from Cabealas for $50. It will be hard to beat Jegs on the price.

Is there a kit sold that lets you use the winch on the front or the back?

Do I have to put a bumper on to use a winch?

I like the idea of the 2500 and having the 6ft control lead.

Certainly, Warn winches are good (I own one).

However, SuperWinches are quality products also.

The SuperWinch ATV2000 has an internal spring brake standard (retrofittable to the SuperWinch T1500).

The SuperWinches draw less power at the same line pull as Warn (e.g., 118 amps vs. 145 amps at 2000 #). Warn has faster line speed.

Considerable discussion and feature comparison can be found in the "winch question" topic on this forum.
