WHAT'S WRONG?

I just got a sp500 and a scrambler 500. They are both 2000 models. They are actually mine and my brother's Christmas presents. Fortunately, we talk my dad into letting us ride them. The scrambler 500 was the first one we rode and it was very fast. A week later when we went back and picked up the sp500, my brother and I were waiting in the dealer's lot with the sp500's motor running. I decided to hop on it and drive it around the parking lot a few times. After that, I got of and before turing it off, I notised that the high temp light was on. I took it inside and the mechanics said that the fan was not plugged up. So they plugged it up and sure enough, in about 2 min. the light went off. When we brought it home I decided to open it up and see how fast it would go. It went fairly strong to 35 mph. and got to 40 and wouldn't go much faster. I was wonder why and is it only because it has only ten hours on it. Then I got on the scrambler and my friend got on the sp500. He got a little head start but not much. He didn't get over 40 that time and i wasn't catching up to fast either, mabey 45-50mph. What's the deal? If any one can help i would appreciate it. sorry i went a little long

Most likely your throttle is not opening completely, this is more common than you might think on new Quads. Have the dealer check the adjustment on the throttle cable thats most likely where your problem lies ,its a simple fix. Also there is an adjustable throttle stop on the thumb throttle, make certain that it is in the full open setting.

This is kind of stupid to say, but it covers one of the bases. You did have it in high range right? I'm not trying to be smart assed or anything, just checking on that point. The first time on one, it seems like the range selector is a little harder to find which is high or low, but I'm talking about the very first time you sit down on it. The second time its no deal. I test drove a Sp500 for the first time a year ago and after I had gone about 30 yards, realized that I had it in low.

I do no for a fact that it was in high because that was the first thing I checked.
It also seems that when in high you have to push pretty hard to get it moving for transporting it from the trailor to the garage but maybe that is what low is for. On the scrambler 500 the throttle seems to be opening up all the way on it because the the first time i jumped on it i wanted to see what it had so i gunned it and the fron wheels popped off the ground about 2 feet. I appreciate your comments and will like to more and i will also ask the dealer about the throttle cable. thanks

If you want your quad to last do this.
DO A PROPER BREAK-IN, testing the topspeed before you the 100 mile oil change can severly shorten the life of the engine.
ALWAYS USE LOW RANGE, then if you want more speed put it in highrange.
GREASE, grease it 1 ounce a week or more.
CHANGE THE OIL, after the 100mile oil change, change the oil atleast every 3 months or 500 miles, more if possible.
ASK QUESTIONS, before you do something ask someone if they have done it that way you can learn from others mistakes, examples: what type of gas? Type of oil? etc.

Not very smart. but some are realy out there. Trust me I'm 15 and my brother is like that. He ounce tried to get on my quad and start it. he put the key in but didn't turn it and started pressing the starter button. Then He tells me it's broken. He takes off and goes to my grandmothers about a 1/2 mile and can't start it. So i walk over there and i see he left it in gear(but I didn't tell him that all he has to do is hold the brake and start it in fear of him runing over someone including him self) I start it up and go home, yeap I let him walk this time.
